What is “Kualoa Ranch” Anyway? The History of the Sacred Land That Became the Stage for Jurassic Park

Before diving into the tour comparison, let’s briefly look at the background of Kualoa Ranch. Knowing what kind of place this is will multiply the excitement you feel during the tour!

Located in the northeastern part of Oahu, Kualoa Ranch is a treasure trove of grand nature spanning an area equivalent to about 450 Tokyo Domes. While it is famous today as a major tourist destination for ATVs, horseback riding, and as a filming location for numerous Hollywood movies like Jurassic Park, it is historically a very sacred and significant place in Hawaii.

A “Sacred Place” Where Only Royalty Could Enter

In ancient Hawaii, Kualoa was considered the most sacred land on Oahu. It was a residence for royalty and a training ground where the king’s children learned martial arts and history. Legend has it that in the past, when Hawaiians passed by this land in canoes, they had to lower their sails as a sign of respect.

Resisting Resort Development to Protect Nature

In 1850, Dr. Gerrit P. Judd, an advisor to King Kamehameha III, purchased this land, laying the foundation for the current Kualoa Ranch.

While waves of resort development—like the hotels lining Waikiki—approached, the owning family held a strong determination to “preserve this beautiful nature and Hawaiian culture for future generations,” continuing to protect the untouched wilderness. Today, it remains an active ranch and farm, engaged not only in tourism but also in livestock farming and agriculture (such as cultivating cacao and taro).

The fact that we can experience the realistic, grand nature where dinosaurs from Jurassic World look ready to jump out at any moment is thanks to the efforts of the people who have protected this sacred land across generations.

With this grand history and nature in mind, let’s look at the differences between the two major popular tours!

Pros and Cons of Each Tour

I confirmed with the tour company when booking and received a general explanation of the differences.

Movie Sites Tour

First is the classic “Movie Sites Tour.” You will tour mainly around the vast Kaʻaʻawa Valley in a large windowless bus.

【Pros】

  • Good Cost and Time Performance: You can quickly cover the main points in 90 minutes, allowing you to enjoy other activities like horseback riding or ATVs with your remaining time.
  • Physically Easy: Since it is a large bus, there is minimal shaking, making it safe for small children and the elderly to participate.
  • Covers Classic Spots: It firmly includes points everyone knows, such as the famous fallen tree from Jurassic Park and Godzilla’s footprint.

【Cons】

  • Mainly Viewing from the Window: Time to disembark and take photos is limited, and the bus cannot enter deeper areas.

Jurassic Adventure

Next is the deeper “Jurassic Adventure.” On this tour, you board a custom 4WD truck and plunge straight into the “world itself” of the movies.

【Pros】

  • Overwhelming Immersive Feeling: You vigorously drive through rugged mountain paths (like Hakipuʻu Valley) where buses cannot enter, giving you the excitement of being part of an expedition team.
  • Enter Special Sets: You can physically step inside massive movie sets (like the cage) that can only be visited on this tour.
  • High Photo Satisfaction: With plenty of time (150 minutes), you can disembark at each spot and take your time capturing photos that look like scenes from the movies.

【Cons】

  • High Price and Long Duration: In addition to putting pressure on your budget, you will spend half a day on this tour.
  • Significant Shaking: Because it drives off-road, it might be a bit tough for those prone to motion sickness or those with lower back pain.

Not Just Jurassic Park! Masterpieces Filmed at Kualoa Ranch

The charm of Kualoa Ranch is not limited to dinosaur movies. In fact, it is used as a filming location for so many ultra-famous works we know that it is called the “Backlot of Hollywood.” During the tour, you can visit the filming sites of masterpieces such as the following:

  1. “LOST” (TV Drama) A survival drama that caused a social phenomenon worldwide. Utilizing the vast grounds, many important scenes were filmed here, such as the scene where Hurley built a homemade golf course and mysterious jungle scenes.

“Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” A hit action movie starring Dwayne Johnson. The harsh and majestic jungle world inside the game into which the characters were sucked features Kualoa’s grand nature projected directly onto the screen.

“Kong: Skull Island” This is the filming location for the eerie and powerful “Boneyard” scene where giant skeletons lie scattered. During the tour, you can actually see the replica of the giant bone set used in the filming.

“GODZILLA” The “giant footprint of Godzilla” that appeared in the 1998 Hollywood version of Godzilla. Deeply carved into the ranch ground, this footprint remains as it is today, making it an excellent commemorative photo spot.

“50 First Dates” A romantic comedy starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore. Set against the beautiful scenery of Hawaii, scenes like the driving sequences are romantically colored by the lush green landscape of Kualoa.

Discovering “Oh, I saw this view in that movie!” one after another is a unique thrill that only Kualoa Ranch tours can provide.

[Personal Experience] 3 Reasons Why I Chose “Jurassic Adventure”

While I have presented an objective comparison so far, as a “Jurassic Park fanatic,” I chose the expensive “Jurassic Adventure” without hesitation.

Having actually participated, here are the three highlights that convinced me, “I paid the extra fee just to see this!”

Reason ①: You Can Physically Enter “That Cage” from Jurassic World

クアロアランチ
Kualoa Ranch
クアロアランチ
Kualoa Ranch

This was the biggest reason and the best experience. On the Adventure Tour, you can actually walk inside the massive cage where the hybrid dinosaur “Indominus Rex” was held in Jurassic World. The concrete walls towering so high you have to look up, and the realistic giant claw marks left behind. The goosebump-inducing emotion obtained by “standing” in that space—rather than looking at it from afar through a bus window—is a privilege exclusive to this tour.

Reason ②: The Spectacular View of the “Sanctuary (Hakipuʻu Valley)” Inaccessible by Bus Tours

クアロアランチ
Kualoa Ranch

Large buses can only enter up to Kaʻaʻawa Valley, where the paths are open. However, the 4WD trucks push even deeper into Hakipuʻu Valley, where steep, sheer cliffs tower close. Taking a deep breath in a space completely devoid of other vehicles or buses felt like being in a truly private jungle.

There, you will also encounter the Jurassic Park jeep and a Triceratops.

クアロアランチ
Kualoa Ranch

While the scene where the dinosaurs run away from the volcanic eruption is only onscreen for a few seconds, it is so impressive that it remains strongly burned into my memory.

クアロアランチ

Reason ③: High Photo Satisfaction Borne from the 150-Minute “Generous Amount of Time”

クアロアランチ
Kualoa Ranch

Since plenty of time is allocated for disembarking at each spot, the guide used dinosaur figures to take trick photos for us, and we were able to fully enjoy acting as if we were hiding from a T-Rex. Being able to immerse myself in “creating artwork” without feeling rushed was a highly satisfying point as a huge fan.

We also encountered Blue!!

We even stepped inside the cage where the Raptors were kept…

and saw the monitor room used to observe the T-Rex!

Ultimately, Which One Should You Choose?

Based on the characteristics of each, here is a summary of the recommended tours by traveler type.

▼ Who should choose the “Movie Sites Tour (90 mins)”

  • You are visiting Hawaii for the first time and want to easily enjoy the classic highlights of Kualoa Ranch.
  • You want to be ambitious and pack other activities like “horseback riding” or “ziplining” into the same day.
  • You are traveling with small children or elderly family members, so you prefer a safe bus with minimal shaking.

▼ Who should choose the “Jurassic Adventure (150 mins)”

  • You absolutely love the Jurassic series and want to immerse yourself in the world of the movies to the ultimate limit.
  • You want to physically step inside “that cage.”
  • You prioritize “views you can only see here,” even if it takes a bit more budget and time.

Tips and Precautions for Joining the Kualoa Ranch Tours

Lastly, I would like to share some important points to enjoy Kualoa Ranch to the absolute fullest (120%).

【CRITICALLY IMPORTANT】 Secure a Seat on the “LEFT SIDE” No Matter What!

For those participating in the Jurassic Adventure, there is a secret tip based on my practical experience that I want to emphasize as loudly as possible. That is, when boarding the custom 4WD truck from the back, you must make sure to sit on the “Left Side” seats (looking forward toward the driver’s seat)!

In fact, throughout the entire tour, almost all of the main photo spots and dinosaur objects appear on the left side. If you sit on the right side, you will have to hold your camera over other participants every time a photo opportunity arises, making it very difficult to see and hard to take pictures. Please line up a little early when boarding and secure a seat on the left side without hesitation!

Other Precautions

  • Book early: The Jurassic Adventure in particular has a very limited capacity, so be sure to secure your reservation as early as possible once your Hawaii travel dates are decided.
  • Bring your passport: You are frequently asked to show your passport in Hawaii. It is mandatory to present it at the front desk when checking in at Kualoa Ranch, so please do not forget it.
  • English guides are perfectly fine: The tour is basically guided in English, but you can fully enjoy it just by listening to the movie background music and looking at the overwhelming scenery, so there is no need to worry.
  • Weather & dirt protection: Because the 4WD vehicle kicks up dust, clothing you don’t mind getting dirty and sneakers are a must. Bringing a poncho to prepare for sudden rain makes it perfect.

Exceptional Local Spots Around Kualoa Ranch to Visit If You Have Time!

The east coast of Oahu (around Kaneohe), where Kualoa Ranch is located, is charming for its relaxed, local atmosphere that differs from Waikiki. If you visit by rental car or The Bus, try stopping by the following spots before or after your tour. They are all excellent shops where you can taste the local vibe of Hawaii!

All of them are located just a short distance from Kualoa Ranch.

① Tropical Farms Macadamia Nuts

クアロアランチ
Kualoa Ranch

This is a local farm surrounded by tree shade, located a few minutes south of Kualoa Ranch by car. The biggest draw here is that you can sample various flavors of macadamia nuts (such as garlic, cinnamon, and Kona coffee flavors) and freshly brewed flavored coffee for free! They offer a wider variety than the supermarkets in Waikiki, and the packaging is Hawaiian and cute, making it ideal for finding souvenirs to hand out. Chickens walk leisurely around the grounds, making it a perfect, healing spot to take a break during a drive.

(Personally, though, I preferred the macadamia nuts from the North Shore!)

② Yummy Huli Huli Chicken

クアロアランチ
Kualoa Ranch

Speaking of Hawaiian local food, “Huli Huli Chicken,” which is grilled while rotating over charcoal, is a must. If you smell the fragrant smoke and sweet-savory scent along the road around Kualoa Ranch, that is your landmark! The chicken, grilled with a crispy skin on the outside and overflowing with juicy meat on the inside, is the best hearty meal to satisfy an stomach made famished by activities. It is the ultimate luxury to order it to go with white rice, park your car along a nearby beach, and bite into it while looking at the blue ocean. (Though I didn’t actually do this myself…)

③ Waiahole Poi Factory

クアロアランチ
Kualoa Ranch

This is an ultra-popular restaurant with a never-ending line that serves traditional Hawaiian food (such as Kalua Pig and Lau Lau). It is located along the Kamehameha Highway on the way back to Waikiki from Kualoa Ranch. The absolute highlight you must eat here is their exquisite ice cream dessert! The recommendation is an item called the “Sweet Lady of Waiahole.” A warm and chewy traditional taro sweet called “Kulolo” is topped with a generous scoop of cold, rich, coconut-flavored “Haupia Ice Cream.” The sensation of warmth and coldness, combined with the natural sweetness of taro and the flavor of coconut melting in your mouth, is an unforgettable deliciousness once you try it. It will make the perfect conclusion to your drive!
